Martin N259S Rescue

Martinliner N259S in flight

Airliners of America participated heavily in saving another Martinliner from the scrapper's torch. 259S, The Spirit of Middle River, is currently on display at the Glen L. Martin Museum.

When Captain Whitesell and his crew of volunteers turned the aircraft over to the Glen L. Martin Museum, he read the following poem that best summarizes the Airliners of America mission:

This Old Airliner
If she could talk,
Oh the stories she'd tell
Of flight into glory
And some that seemed like hell.

She'd tell you about
Her ten million miles
Carrying two million people
The tragedies and the smiles.

She'd speak of her pilots
Some great and some not
And fifty thousand landings
Some great...and some not so hot.

Of nighttime approaches
In the ice and snow
In hundreds of cities
From here to Buffalo.

Six years aloft,
Sun rise and sun set
With kids, awed at her windows
Saying, "Daddy, are we there yet?"

She'd pay tribute to the stewardess
Who met you at the door
Who really meant it when
She said "Welcome aboard"

And to countless mechanics
Striving through the nights
To keep her and her passengers
Safe on flight after flight.

And once she'd told you
Of her glorious career
She'd tell you how
She found her way here.

Of the years of neglect
Forlorn and forgotten
Nearing the end and the torch,
Her tires were rotten

'Till a crazy group
Of volunteers
Heard her crying
Loud and clear

"I've worked hard for you,
Can't you see?
I am worth keeping
Save me...SAVE ME!"
